Experiences in a Past Life
It's funny. I don't know about you, but I read a lot more when I was younger.
I'm often reluctant to admit this, as I would love to be known as a voracious reader. And yet, at a certain point in my life, outdoor activities and socializing became more important to me than being solitary and reading.
Perhaps that is the natural progression of life. Priorities change.
When I was studying at university, I burned out from academic life. This came as a surprise, as I thought I would enjoy it more than I did. I remember thinking to myself "Oh hell, who is going to read this essay on patristics anyway?!" and instead began to seek out social experiences rather than academic discovery.
I did not pursue a masters in Medieval Studies as I was originally intending. My first job out of college was as a tour guide. I was charged with leading groups of 25-30 people through the wilds of Europe on preplanned weeklong active vacations.
It was harder than anything I had ever done previously. Imagine - you (and a co-leader) are responsible for putting on an incredible 5-star vacation for a group of type-A executives and their families. It was exhilarating, rewarding, and exhausting. But it taught me a lot about customer service, setting expectations, and gracefully handling obstacles.
And - the best part - it gave my younger self the opportunity I needed to travel, make friends across the globe, and build my own confidence and identity.
Do you ever look back on your own life and reflect on your journey thus far?
Just a thought!
xoxo
